Welcome to the start of another exciting beekeeping season! We hope you and your bees have made it through the winter and are looking forward to the warmer months ahead.

Our first Field Day of the season will be held on Saturday, 1 August, and we’re hoping for a beautiful sunny day. START TIME 10.30 due to the cold weather in the mornings.

This first Field Day is an opportunity for members to get together, catch up after winter, and plan their approach to getting the best from their hives for the season ahead.

As we come out of winter, many beekeepers open their hives with questions:

• Why has my colony weakened?
• Why have my bees disappeared?
• Why didn’t my hive survive the winter?

These are common concerns, and we’ll be discussing the most likely causes and what you can do to give your colonies the best start to spring.

Topics we’ll cover include:

• Waking up your bees after winter
• Stimulating hive growth by adjusting sugar-to-water feeding ratios
• What to look for when you first open your hives
• Feeding and nutrition
• Varroa treatments
• Hive positioning
• Requeening and assessing queen performance

Whether you’re a new beekeeper or have years of experience, this is a great opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and learn from fellow members.
